Shopify is the easiest way to launch an online store and the hardest platform to rank. Themes hide structural SEO issues. Apps add code bloat that hurts Core Web Vitals. The platform has weird URL behaviour (every collection URL has /collections/ prefix, products live at /products/SLUG and /collections/COLLECTION/products/SLUG simultaneously — canonical hell). - Theme has SEO baked in (or broken in) — A bad theme will lazy-load images wrong, miss alt text, render H1 inside H2, break breadcrumb schema. Theme audit is step one.
- App bloat hurts Core Web Vitals — Every Shopify app injects JS. 20 apps = 50 third-party scripts = LCP 4+ seconds = Google demotion. We audit every installed app, remove the ones that don’t move revenue.
- Robots.txt limits — Shopify won’t let you edit robots.txt directly until youâre on Shopify Plus. You can add directives via robots.txt.liquid but only the supported ones. We work around the constraints.
- Sitemap quirks — Shopify auto-generates a sitemap that includes everything, including draft products, archived pages, hidden collections. We monitor and adjust.
- Duplicate-content traps — Same product can appear at multiple URLs (with/without collection prefix). Tag pages, vendor pages, and search results pages also create duplicates. We canonical-tag the right primaries.
- Product schema is tricky — Shopifyâs default Product schema has gaps. We layer additional JSON-LD: aggregateRating, reviewBy, brand, manufacturer, materials, audience, suggestedAge — whateverâs relevant for your category.
