What is SEO? A plain-English guide for business owners

SEO explained without the jargon — what it actually is, the three parts that matter, how long it takes, and how to spot a bad agency. Written for Thai business owners.

SEO — search engine optimization — is the work of getting your website to show up when people search Google for what you sell. That is it. No magic, no secret button. When someone in Bangkok types "seo agency" or "ร้านอาหารใกล้ฉัน", Google picks a handful of pages to show first. SEO is the work of becoming one of those pages.

This guide explains what that work actually involves, in plain language.

Why SEO matters

Most buying decisions now start with a search. People search, click one of the first few results, and rarely look past the first page. If your business is not on that first page for the things you sell, those customers simply never see you — they see a competitor instead. Unlike ads, which stop the moment you stop paying, a page that ranks keeps bringing in visitors month after month.

The three parts of SEO

A real campaign works on all three of these at once. An agency that only does one is selling you a third of the job.

1. On-page SEO — your website itself

This is everything on your own pages: the words, the titles, the structure, the loading speed, how it looks on a phone. Google can only rank a page it understands, so the content has to clearly answer what people are searching for. Thin or duplicated pages do not rank — which is why we put so much weight on real content writing and a fast, well-built site through WordPress development.

2. Off-page SEO — your reputation

This is mostly backlinks: links from other websites pointing to yours. Google treats each quality link as a vote of confidence. A page with strong, relevant links outranks a similar page with none. The catch is that quality matters far more than quantity — a few links from real, indexed publications beat thousands of spam links, which can actively hurt you. This is where our Tier 1 sponsored placements come in.

3. Technical SEO — can Google read your site

If Google cannot crawl, index, or load your pages quickly, none of the above matters. Technical SEO covers crawlability, mobile speed (Core Web Vitals), and structured data so search engines understand your pages. It is invisible to visitors but decisive for ranking.

How long does SEO take?

The honest answer is months, not weeks — typically three to six months before you see meaningful movement, longer in competitive markets. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is either lucky or lying. Because the timeline is real, we back our SEO service with a six-month money-back guarantee: if there are no meaningful results in six months, you get your money back (the full terms are in our refund policy).

How to spot a bad SEO agency

  • Guarantees a #1 ranking in 30 days — impossible; Google does not work that way
  • Sells bulk PBN or "10,000 backlinks for $5" — these get sites penalised
  • Locks you into a 12-month contract before showing any results
  • Reports vanity metrics ("impressions up 400%!") instead of rankings, traffic, and leads

We do none of these. Here is how we actually work, month to month.

SEO in Thailand specifically

The Thai market has its own rules. Search happens in both Thai and English, often for the same business; the Google map pack decides foot traffic for local shops; and customers move to LINE or WhatsApp to actually buy. Good SEO here is bilingual by default — see our SEO service and the areas we cover.

Where to start

If you want SEO done properly — and explained honestly along the way — see our SEO service or get a free audit. We will tell you the smallest engagement that gets you to your goal, not the biggest one we can sell.
