Domain Rating benchmarks for Thai businesses — what's realistic by industry

Domain Rating targets vary wildly by industry and city. Here's what's realistic for Thai businesses in each major vertical — and what's vanity-metric territory.

Domain Rating (Ahrefs' proprietary metric, 0-100 scale) is the most commonly cited "how strong is this site" number. It's also the most commonly misinterpreted. DR 30 is excellent for some niches and pitifully weak for others.

Here's what's actually realistic for Thai businesses in each major vertical.

How Domain Rating actually works

DR is computed from the size and quality of a domain's referring backlink profile. It's logarithmic — moving from DR 20 to DR 30 is hard, DR 30 to DR 40 is much harder, DR 60 to DR 70 is enormous.

It is NOT a direct Google ranking factor. Google doesn't see Ahrefs's DR number. But it correlates strongly with what Google does see (link profile depth and authority), so DR is a useful proxy.

Key misunderstanding: higher DR is not always better. A DR 80 fashion blog isn't competing for the same SERPs as a DR 35 Pattaya hotel. The right DR depends entirely on what you're trying to rank for.

Realistic Thai SMB benchmarks by industry

### Local services (restaurants, salons, fitness, retail)

Realistic top-3 DR range: 8-25

Local services rank primarily on Google Business Profile signals (NAP, reviews, photos, Map Pack), not domain authority. Investing in DR beyond 25 is diminishing returns for this category. Local citations + steady GBP cultivation beats Tier 1 backlink work.

Real example: a Pattaya seafood restaurant at DR 14 with a strong Google Business Profile dominates its local search; a competitor at DR 30 with no GBP doesn't appear.

### Tier 2 Thai SMB (Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Hat Yai service businesses)

Realistic top-3 DR range: 12-30

Lower competitive density in Tier 2 cities means the DR threshold to dominate is genuinely lower. Most Tier 2 markets are won at DR 20-30 with solid content + Map Pack.

Clients in this segment pushing for DR 40+ are spending budget on link work that doesn't move the needle.

### Hotels (Tier 2 / boutique, not luxury chains)

Realistic top-3 DR range: 18-35

Hotels compete with both OTAs (DR 90+) and direct competitors. Trying to outrank Booking.com on "hotels Bangkok" is impossible regardless of DR; trying to outrank a competitor at DR 25 is achievable at DR 30+.

Strategy: hotels should target DR 30-40 and focus on niche/district-specific queries where OTAs are weak.

### B2B SaaS / professional services (Thai-market focused)

Realistic top-3 DR range: 25-50

B2B Thai market competitive density is moderate. DR 30-40 wins most Thai B2B SaaS niches. DR 50+ is overkill unless competing internationally.

### B2B SaaS / professional services (international competition)

Realistic top-3 DR range: 40-65

If you're a Thai B2B company competing for English-language keywords against US/EU competitors, DR matters much more. The DR floor for cracking page-one on competitive English B2B keywords is roughly 45-50.

### Bangkok central commercial (real estate, legal, finance, consulting)

Realistic top-3 DR range: 35-55

Bangkok central professional services has 20+ active competitors investing in SEO. The DR threshold to compete here is genuinely high. Most Bangkok law firms ranking for "corporate lawyer Bangkok" are DR 40+.

### Tourism + hospitality content sites (blog-style, multiple cities)

Realistic top-3 DR range: 50-75

Travel/tourism is one of the most link-intensive niches globally. To compete with Lonely Planet, Time Out, and similar sites for high-traffic tourism keywords requires DR 60+.

Most Thai-market tourism content sites stop at DR 40-50 and target niche queries (district guides, specific experiences) where the DR ceiling is lower.

### National-scale e-commerce

Realistic top-3 DR range: 45-70

National e-commerce competes with Lazada (DR 89), Shopee (DR 87), and category-leading marketplaces. Direct e-commerce sites rarely beat them on broad terms; they win on brand searches and niche product queries.

Typical Thai e-commerce direct sites: DR 30-45, ranking only for their own brand + niche product queries.

What DR numbers are vanity metric territory

For most Thai SMB businesses, time spent chasing DR beyond the realistic range becomes wasted budget. Specifically:

  • Local services chasing DR 40+: budget would be better spent on Google Business Profile and reviews
  • Bangkok restaurants chasing DR 50+: still won't outrank Wongnai; should focus on direct brand-name searches and Map Pack
  • Thai B2B SaaS chasing DR 70+ to compete with US competitors: better to compete on niche keywords where DR matters less
  • Hotels chasing DR 60+ to outrank Booking.com: structurally impossible; should focus on direct-booking niche queries

How to know your real target DR

Don't pick a DR target in isolation. Pick it based on what your direct competitors actually have:

1. Search for your top 3 target keywords 2. Pull the top 5 results for each 3. Check the DR of each (Ahrefs free tool or paid) 4. Your target DR is roughly the median of those top results, ideally with 5-10 point buffer above

If the top results are DR 25-30 for your keywords, you need DR 30-40. If they're DR 50-60, you need DR 50+ — and a different strategy.

Realistic DR growth timelines

Going from one DR tier to the next takes serious time and link investment:

  • DR 0 → 20: 3-6 months of basic citation + content work for a new site
  • DR 20 → 30: 6-12 months of mixed Tier 2 + occasional Tier 1 placements
  • DR 30 → 40: 12-18 months of consistent Tier 1 editorial outreach
  • DR 40 → 50: 18-36 months of high-investment PR + content + outreach
  • DR 50 → 60: 3-5 years for most domains
  • DR 60+: usually requires a dedicated PR team alongside SEO

Budgeting accordingly matters. A client with ฿15K/month budget chasing DR 40+ in 12 months will be disappointed; the same budget targeted at DR 25-30 with strong Map Pack delivers visible results.

What to do this week

Quick competitive DR assessment:

1. Use Ahrefs free DR checker on your own domain 2. Pull DR for your 5 top competitors 3. Calculate the median 4. Compare your number to the median

If you're already above the median: stop chasing DR. Focus on content depth, on-page SEO, and conversion optimisation.

If you're 5-10 points below: a focused 12-month link-building program can close the gap.

If you're 20+ points below: reconsider keyword strategy. Targeting easier niche keywords where the DR median is lower may be the smarter play than spending 3 years catching up on link authority.
