Custom themes vs page builders

A page builder like Elementor or WPBakery gets you live fast, but you pay for it every month in render-blocking assets, layout shift and a database stuffed with shortcode markup. For brochure sites with a small budget we will configure a builder cleanly and strip what isn't used. For anything that needs to load fast and rank, we build a custom block theme: native Gutenberg blocks, theme.json controlling colours and spacing, and only the CSS the page actually needs.

The test is simple — can you change the hero text without breaking the layout, and does the homepage stay under a sensible payload on mobile? A well-built custom theme passes both. A typical builder install usually fails the second.

Custom post types, taxonomies and data structure

Putting properties, courses, menu items or case studies into ordinary pages is where most sites rot. We register custom post types and taxonomies so each content type has its own fields, its own archive and its own URL logic. Combined with ACF or native block bindings, your team fills in structured fields instead of fighting a freeform editor, and the front end stays consistent across hundreds of entries.

This structure also feeds schema markup, filtered listings and clean internal linking — the groundwork that makes a site genuinely searchable rather than just present.

REST API integrations, staging and secure code

WordPress is a capable backend. We use the REST API to connect it to booking systems, CRMs, LINE, payment gateways and headless front ends where that makes sense. Every integration is built with nonce verification, sanitised input and prepared SQL — no raw queries, no trusting user data, no unsanitised output.

All work happens on a staging copy first. We test plugin updates, PHP version bumps and new features there before anything touches the live site, then deploy with a clear rollback path. You never find out a change broke checkout because we pushed straight to production.

Performance, caching and ongoing care

Speed is configured, not wished for. We set up object and page caching, serve images in WebP at the right dimensions, defer non-critical JavaScript, and keep the plugin count low because every active plugin is a query and a security surface. The aim is real Core Web Vitals improvement on a mid-range phone, not a flattering desktop score.

We also harden the install — disable file editing in admin, lock down xmlrpc where unused, enforce strong roles and keep automated off-site backups. A fast site that gets hacked or wiped helps nobody.
