Tier 2 Backlinks That Charge Up Your Tier 1 Links

This is a charge-up tactic, not a stand-alone ranking play. Done carelessly it gets your Tier 1 links deindexed and wastes the spend. Done with the right anchor mix, indexing and velocity, it lifts pages that have stalled a few positions short of where the on-page work says they should sit.

What a Tier 2 layer actually is

Tier 2 links point at your Tier 1 backlinks rather than at your homepage or service pages. We use web 2.0 properties (think Blogger, WordPress.com, Medium, Tumblr, Weebly) and cloud assets (Google Sites, AWS and Azure-hosted pages, document and slide platforms) to build a small network of supporting pages, each one referencing a Tier 1 URL.

The job of these pages is to make a Tier 1 link look like a normal, referenced part of the web. A guest post that itself has three or four contextual links pointing to it carries far more weight than the same post sitting in isolation. We measure the lift by watching whether the Tier 1 URLs start ranking for their own keywords and getting recrawled more often.

Anchor mix and link velocity

At Tier 2 the anchor rules relax because the links do not point at your money site, but they are not a free-for-all. We keep the mix natural: mostly URL, brand and generic anchors, with the occasional partial-match phrase. Over-optimised exact-match anchors at Tier 2 still leak a footprint that can flag the whole structure.

Velocity is where most cheap Tier 2 work fails. A thousand links fired at a fresh Tier 1 page in two days is a classic spam pattern. We drip the links over weeks, vary the platforms and the publish dates, and stop well short of saturating any single Tier 1 URL.

Indexing — the step everyone skips

A Tier 2 link that Google never crawls passes nothing. Most failed Tier 2 campaigns are simply unindexed. We treat indexing as a deliverable, not an afterthought: we ping the pages, point a few internal and social signals at them, and re-check indexation status before we call a batch complete.

We report which supporting URLs are indexed and which are not, and we top up the ones that drop out. If a property gets deindexed for spam, it is replaced, not quietly counted as live.
